Dr. Jennifer Bachtold, Ph.D., CADC-II

Dr. Jennifer Bachtold, Ph.D., CADC-II is a Psychological Assistant to Dr. Sarah Ray at Advanced Health Care. She completed her undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. She was awarded her Master’s Degree in Psychology with an emphasis in addiction studies from Northcentral University in Prescott, Arizona. Dr. Bachtold then received her Doctorate of Psychology degree in the fall of 2015. She is also a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor- II and Internationally Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor. Dr. Bachtold has experience conducting individual and group therapy with adolescents and adults in an array of clinical settings ranging from inpatient residential, detox, and group home settings to outpatient facilities, in home care, and jail facilities.

Dr. Bachtold began her clinical work during graduate school as a substance abuse counselor for a residential treatment facility and was also contracted to work inside the local county jail facility to assess and admit inmates court-ordered to treatment programs into residential treatment. There she administered substance abuse assessments and provided co-occurring treatment through individual and group cognitive behavioral therapy along with process and educational groups. During this time, she also worked in a group home with adolescent male sex offenders where she provided individual basic skills training (BST) along with psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) and facilitated skill groups. After her time at the group home, she started working as a behavioral specialist providing BST and PSR to individuals in their own homes through a company for therapy and behavior consultation. After moving to California, she began working at Turning Point Crisis house, where she worked with adults with severe mental illness who were in immediate crisis. Dr. Bachtold conducted individual therapy and facilitated anxiety, CBT and DBT groups. After this experience she began her work with the Sheriff’s Department as a correctional counselor working with inmates on their adjustment to incarceration, promotion of pro-social behavior, and preparation of reintegration into society. She also performs needs assessments of inmates as it relates to criminal behavior and facilitates group counseling of drug education and cognitive behavioral therapy groups. She is also a suicide prevention specialist and is on the crisis response team for active crisis within the jail. Dr. Bachtold has experience delivering many evidenced-based therapies through group and individual therapy, providing individual short-term and long-term psychotherapy, assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning.

In 2015, Jennifer joined the team at Advanced Health Care as a Psychological Assistant to Dr. Sarah Ray. As a Psychological Assistant, she is working under the direct supervision of licensed Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Ray. However, she conducts sessions independently, one-on-one with her clients, and meets weekly with Dr. Ray to discuss the progress of her cases.

Alanya Vaene, Ph.D.

Dr. Alanya Vaene is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist at Advanced Health Care. Dr. Vaene received her doctorate degree from Alliant International University in San Diego, California, which is an APA-accredited graduate program in Clinical Psychology. She completed her first psychology internship at Sharp Memorial Rehabilitation Center, where she provided Solution-Focused psychotherapy and Biofeedback to patients coping with chronic pain. Dr. Vaene later gained clinical experience at North Central Community Mental Health Clinic where she performed intake assessments, facilitated group therapy, and conducted short and long-term individual therapy with patients coping with chronic and severe mental illness. Dr. Vaene has also worked at Aurora Behavioral Health Care, an inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facility for children, adolescents, and adults. At this facility, she conducted group therapy, provided individual short-term psychotherapy, and assisted in psychological assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning.

In 2013, Dr. Vaene joined the team at Advanced Health Care as a psychological assistant to Dr. Sarah Ray, and in 2016 she became a Licensed Clinical Psychologist at Advanced Health Care. Dr. Vaene is committed to empowering and motivating her clients to live an inspired life. She has a particular focus in health psychology, which includes providing counseling for patients coping with medical issues and chronic pain.

Jeanne Conner, Psy.D., LMFT

Dr. Jeanne Conner is a CA Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Dr. Conner received her Doctorate of Psychology in Couples & Family Therapy from Alliant International University (AIU) in San Diego, CA in May of 2016. In addition to her doctoral degree requirements, she completed the necessary courses and field work to receive her Chemical Dependency Certificate from AIU. Previously, she was awarded a Master’s degree from National University in 2001. Her undergraduate studies were in Spanish Literature at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas where she graduated with her B.A. in 1999.
Dr. Conner is bilingual, and conducts her sessions in both English and Spanish, depending on the needs of the client. She began her clinical work in graduate school with the Community Research Foundation (CRF) where she worked for two years at Isis Center, an inpatient psychiatric facility with high risk, suicidal, and severely mentally ill clients. From there, she worked at an outpatient psychiatric facility, Maria Sardinas Wellness Recovery Center, where she worked with adults experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and addiction. During her doctoral program, Dr. Conner worked at M.A.S.T. (Mobile Adolescent Service Team) for three years providing therapy to adolescents and their families. Most of these families were considered high-risk, as they were involved in the juvenile justice system or living at a family shelter. She provided solution-focused therapy to teens and their families using long-term individual treatment combined with family therapy. Since 2015, Dr. Conner has been working at Pain Solutions of San Diego conducting group therapy for individuals experiencing chronic pain due to work-related injuries. In 2016, she joined the team at Advanced Health Care to provide individual treatment using an integrative approach of evidence based therapies, such as mindfulness-based practice as well as cognitive-based therapy, for adults struggling with chronic pain, chronic illness, depression, anxiety, trauma, child and family concerns, or other change of life challenges.

Nassim Valery, LMFT

Mrs. Nassim Valery, LMFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist at Advanced Health Care. She completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Cal State University, San Marcos and was awarded her Master’s Degree in Marital and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego. Mrs. Valery has experience conducting individual, family and group therapy with children and adults in an outpatient setting. She has extensive experience assisting people of all ages work through depression, anxiety, trauma, self-esteem, childhood disorders, and change of life difficulties. She specializes in the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy to assist her clients in meeting their personal goals, improving their mood, and functioning more effectively in their life.

Mrs. Valery began her clinical work during graduate school as a marriage and family therapist trainee for Rady’s Children’s Outpatient Psychiatry. While there, she conducted individual and family psychotherapy with children, adolescent and families who suffered from depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, relationship disturbances, and adolescent disorders such as ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. After this internship was completed, Mrs. Valery joined Counseling and Behavioral Specialists as in intern from 2012-2014 and then as a Licensed MFT from 2014 to 2016. In this role, she completed outpatient treatment, including providing counseling to children, adolescents and adults affected by domestic violence, sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, endangerment, removal from the home and adoption. Mrs. Valery also provided treatment to parents, foster parents and caregivers needing support and education in raising children affected by trauma and abuse. She has conducted conjoint therapy sessions between perpetrating and/or non-protective parents and their children to address protective issues present in the home and to aid in reunification. In addition, Mrs. Valery facilitated a domestic violence victim group, provided therapy to clients of the Child Welfare System, and was involved in the juvenile dependency system.

In 2016, Mrs. Valery joined the team at Advanced Health Care as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

Kimberley Schulz, M.A.

Kimberley Schulz, M.A., is a Psychological Assistant to Dr. Sarah Ray at Advanced Health Care. She was awarded her Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the APA accredited Alliant International University in San Diego in the spring of 2015 and is currently finishing her doctoral degree from Alliant. She completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at Chapman University in Orange, California. Kimberley has experience conducting individual psychotherapy with adults, as well as providing several different types of biofeedback. Her clinical experiences range from hospital settings to outpatient clinics and rehabilitation centers.

Kimberley began her clinical work as an animal therapy specialist working in hospital, nursing, and adult day care settings with older adults and patients with brain injuries, special needs, and/or chronic illness. During her graduate training, she worked at a variety of sites including San Diego Center for the Blind, where she worked with adults with visual impairment doing patient advocacy and co-facilitating group therapy. She then worked for Sharp Hospital’s Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program, providing behavioral intervention to address the psychological and physiological aspects of chronic pain disorders. Her main duties at Sharp included conducting individual treatment sessions utilizing various types of biofeedback and assisting in medication compliance, as well as facilitating Therapeutic Self Care and Fibromyalgia therapy groups. Following this, she worked as a trainee at the University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center on the Patient and Family Support Services team. While there, Kimberley conducted psychological assessments and short or long-term individual psychotherapy with cancer patients and families experiencing mental health challenges related to the cancer experience, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, relationship struggles, stress reduction, insomnia, bereavement, or other emotional aspects of chronic and complex illness. She also provided consultation to primary and multidisciplinary medical teams, including psychiatrists, oncologists, and nurses. She has experience delivering many evidenced-based therapies and utilizes an integrative, client-focused approach to psychotherapy that draws upon cognitive-behavioral and acceptance and commitment therapies. She has a special interest in self-compassion and utilizes both compassion and mindfulness-based therapeutic techniques in her psychotherapy practice.

Yvette Ruiz Johnson

Yvette Ruiz Johnson is the Office Manager for Advanced Health Care. Her tenure with Dr. Sarah Ray began in October of 2008. Her job responsibilities include attending to the myriad of requests for information from patients, doctors, lawyers, and other health-related professionals. She also handles scheduling and rescheduling of appointments, assisting with Workers’ Compensation and other types of report writing, creation and updating of client charts, and many other office-related duties. Yvette brings a wealth of administrative experience in both the public and private sectors. Her excellent verbal and written skills, combined with her compassionate and easy-going personality, are a great asset to our team, as well as to Advanced Health Care’s clientele.
